Dr. David Samadi on Movember: A Call to Action for Men’s Health

Movember

By Dr. David Samadi

November marks Movember, the annual movement encouraging men to grow a moustache to raise awareness about critical men’s health issues that often go undiscussed. Dr. David Samadi, Director of Men’s Health at St. Francis Hospital, Roslyn, NY, is a passionate advocate for this campaign and urges men to use this time as an opportunity to focus on their health. “Expect to see more moustaches this month,” Dr. Samadi says. “It’s a visible reminder to speak up about men’s health. Men die, on average, six years earlier than women, and many of those deaths could be prevented. Movember’s mission is to reduce premature deaths by 25% by 2030, and I fully support this goal.” Movember focuses on three key areas: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health, including suicide prevention. “As a urologist, I regularly see men who need more information on these issues,” Dr. Samadi explains. “Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men, yet early detection through routine PSA testing starting at age 40 can save lives.” Dr. Samadi also highlights testicular cancer, which predominantly affects men aged 15-34. “The survival rate is high at 95%, but self-checks are crucial. Detecting abnormalities early could save a young man’s life.” Mental health and suicide prevention are equally urgent. “Three out of four suicides are men, which is heartbreaking,” Dr. Samadi notes. “We need to normalize conversations about mental health. Checking in on the men in our lives and encouraging them to seek professional help when needed can make all the difference.” Movember is about taking action, whether by growing a moustache, hosting an event, or donating to support men’s health initiatives locally and globally. Dr. Samadi reminds us, “Today is the day to start saving men’s lives. When men have the facts, they can take steps toward better health and longer lives.”   Dr. David Samadi is the Director of Men’s Health and Urologic Oncology at St. Francis Hospital in Long Island.
